How do you save your game progress between scenes in Unity? After finishing the integration of your saving system in Unity, the thing that you might notice is that it only works in one scene. You are curious how to make multiple levels and ensure that the saving system will save your player's position, health, score and even the level scene in which the progress is saved. Just like the previous tutorial, this tutorial also uses JSON like in the Save Game in Unity video that was posted in April 2024. If you want to make a level system for your game in Unity, you will need to open your level loader script. This C# script contains the if-statement that checks if you have a sufficient amount of coins. You also need to add a static int that will describe your current level. The level value will be connected to the Scene Manager. What does that mean? In the load level script, for the integer that defines your current level, you need to make sure that it is checked in the void which contains a system of levels. If the value is 0, it means you are on the first level. case 0 will consist of only one line: scenemanager.loadscene("SampleScene"). If the level value is 1, then it should load the second level, it will have SceneTwo inside the LoadScene() function. This scene is just a duplicate of the SampleScene, with some small differences. You can also add multiple levels, but that will make the level system even more complex. Now it is time for the saving system. Go to player data and add public int level. Save the script and go to Player Data Manager. Make sure that you put the level value into the playerData. For introduction, you should use LevelLoader.level in order to make it work properly. How to Save Level Progress in Unity 3D!
If you make a game in Unity and use New Input System for player movement, you might notice that, every time you want to restart your game after game over, the game is frozen due to Time.timeScale is set to 0. This can easily be fixed by going to your player's script and adding a public void inside the game manager, which is designed to restart your game and all its values. For restarting a game in Unity, you need to bring TimeScale back to 1 and bring all values that were default before the game is over. If you have some complex data, like scores, coin counts and lives, make sure to reset them to their defaults. You also need to make sure that New Input System requires OnEnable and OnDisable, because that makes the input enabled when the game is playing and disabled when the game is over. It should also remain disabled before entering the main game screens and in that case, the input system will be defined correctly. Just make sure to implement the scripts in the way as it is explained in order to avoid any issues. 2D Platformer in Unity - Timescale Bug with New Input System
In this video, I will teach you how to make a space shooter in Unity. It is a sequel to the previous tutorial, but it includes some additional parts, like how to add a bullet shooting feature and how to make a better movement for the rotating object. To make a space shooter, you need to create a bullet object that will also be a triangle, but will be smaller. You should set its color to white in order to make it clearly visible. But that is not sufficient! You also need a spawn object, and the triangle bullet should have a 2D rigidbody. Make sure to make a prefab of this object. Now you should go back to the C# script: Add a reference to the game object - call it arrowObject. Add a public transform spawnObject and the last thing you need to have is a shooting speed, which is a float. Drag the prefab and add the shooting speed. As you can see, the prefab does not spawn well. It does not have the required gravity direction. To fix that, go to script and add Physics.gravity to the spawnObject.forward and change force mode to force. This will apply gravity to different rotations of the triangle. How do you change the pivot point of an object in Unity? If you add a new 2D object to the scene, a problem that you might have every time is that you cannot modify the pivot point in the way you would like. Instead of having a pivot point positioned in the center, and your object is positioned above, you will face this issue. To fix that, you need to do this: Create an empty parent object and add a box collider. Make sure to move the triangle object above the center. Now you should add a box collider 2D. If the empty parent has a box collider, that will make sure that the child object is on a different position and will be rotating around the parent object. An easy way to make the object rotate is by adding a simple C# script: Add a public float variable that will be called Speed. This value will be used in determining how fast will the object move. To make the object rotate around the center, you need to add a transform.Rotate() line of code. It will be cool to make a space shooter with this triangle! But that will be explained in the next video. The point of this tutorial is in rotating the parent object, not the object that is inside it. If you want to destroy a game object by tapping in Unity, follow these steps! Since the New Input System is a default choice for my tutorials, I will first teach you how to implement a simple system for tapping and clicking in Unity. If you already have the new input system package installed in Unity, all you have to do is to add a new input actions asset, generate C# class and add a new layer called "Click". Inside that action layer, add an action called "Touch". This action will include only two bindings: Mouse button and screen tap. At first, you need to make the introduction to the new input system. You can do it in void Awake(), simply by saying input = new InputSystem(). Now it is time to add the input action. Do it simply by adding input.Click.Touch.performed. You need to define what action do you want to be performed. It will be called OnTap. Make sure to put a Callback Context, and an if statement that checks if you click on the screen. The parts of the script are defined with raycasting. You need to cast the screen to world point if you want to instantiate the game object that will symbolize the cursor. The reason why you also need a circle object is because it will be an aiming cursor every time you click on the screen. The void OnMouseDown() is still considered old input system, but it can be useful for detecting if you are tapping the object. If you want to make your player double jump in Unity, follow these steps! Since you have already configured the game and you are wondering how to make your player double jump in Unity, it is very easy! You just need to go to your player's C# script and make sure that you add some new values: the Boolean that will detect double jump will be called canDoubleJump. This Boolean will be checked every time you jump. In the first jump, it will be true, but in the second jump, it will be false. To make a quick system that will detect if your player is jumping, you need to add OnJump. In that void, you will check if your player can double jump and is grounded. Make a small if statement that will check if your player is on ground. Inside the statement, you need to add a Jump() void. That will be a simple line that will allow your player to jump. In OnJump(), you need to check if your player can double jump. This check is very important because during your first jump, your isGrounded Boolean will be false and you need to put an else-if situation to ensure that canDoubleJump is true. After performing the second jump, your canDoubleJump Boolean reverts to false and you should wait until your player lands in order to perform the same double jump again. If your player cannot double jump, you need to make some changes to isGrounded. The isGrounded Boolean should be changed because that will introduce a faster way to detect if your player is on the ground. To make that check, introduce the isGrounded Boolean in the void Update(). Then, you should check if the player is on ground and if the y velocity is less than 0.01, meaning that if your player's y velocity is on the ground, it should be able to double jump. In this video, I will teach you how to prevent your player from being stuck on the walls or platforms in Unity. My player is sometimes stuck on the platforms and I don't like when it happens. If your player is being stuck on the walls in Unity, follow these steps! Many characters that are controlled with rigidbody usually have problems with bouncing and being stuck on the walls. There are two ways to fix this problem. If you want to use the rigidbody, you can follow this simple guide: Open your player's rigidbody and make sure to change the collision type to continuous. You can also do it by adding a simple line in this part of the script. Another setting you need to change is the physics default contact offset. This setting applies to rigidbody characters, this will make a quick fix for the slope and wall issue, but it won't be perfect. It will cause that kind of bug sometimes, so a more valuable solution will be to use character controller. That way of movement will deprecate all the problems with physics and the player will apply a more stable movement without any lagging. If you want a better way to prevent your player from sticking on the walls, use a character controller. You should reinvent the entire script by changing the lines of code that say anything related to rigidbody. Also, you need to change some parts of the script by adding two Boolean values: move left and move right. You need to define them at the OnLeftKeyPressed and OnRightKeyPressed. If the left key pressed value is true, the right key pressed should be false. Check the Boolean values by saying if moveLeft and if moveRight. Use this line of code to make it work. In this video, I will teach you how to make an upgrade shop in Unity. Before adding an upgrade shop, I will first create a simple upgrade menu that will consist of a purchase button and the price. The price will be slightly under the button, so if you don't have any image to add into the button, you can simply type "Health" or "Speed", something like that. I will first show you how to make a coin system, which will count how many coins have you collected during the gameplay. The implementation of the coin system is simple: you need a variable called coin count, then you need a number of coins that are currently collected, and that value will be only debugged instead of being displayed. You can also add the Text element to display how many coins have been collected, but I will only add the coin number that will tell the total number of coins, which is the coin count value. To make sure that saving that kind of value works, you need to use PlayerPrefs, and add a new key that will be called "Coins". This key will contain a simple line of code, telling the script to load the coin count value with the key. The coin count will be equal to the coins this session value, simply because it will be easy to save coins instead of launching the game with zero coins. For the correct implementation of the upgrades, you need to make sure that your player simply cannot press the button if he/she does not collect enough coins. This will prevent the coin value to become negative and it will prevent the player from upgrading without limits.
